Frequently Asked Questions About Microsoft Security Specialization Audits in FY27

The new third-party audit process for the core Microsoft Security Specializations has Partners asking many questions around them. This list features some of the most common questions we’re getting and quick responses as to what this translates to.
Which Microsoft Security Specializations Now Require a Third-Party audit?
Four core Security specializations are moving to the independent audit model: Cloud Security, Data Security, Identity and Access Management, and Threat Protection. The Digital Sovereignty specialization also uses an independent audit and was released in the same set of checklists, which is why we cover all five here.
When Did the New Audit Checklists Become Available?
Microsoft released the audit checklists on August 7, 2026. The four core Security checklists are Version 1.0, active from July 31 through December 31, 2026. Checklists are refreshed about twice a year, typically in July and January. Those dates are important since you’re audited based on the checklist active when you meet with the auditor, not by the checklist when you registered.
How Long is a “Pass” Result Valid?
A Pass satisfies the audit requirement for two years, while the specialization status and badge are awarded one year at a time. You may be able to renew the annual badge without re-auditing if your last Pass is still within the two-year window and you continue to meet all prerequisites.
Who Pays for the Audit?
The partner pays, directly to the approved third-party audit provider. Confirm current pricing with the provider before you schedule. The audit costs $2,700 to $4,000 for the four core Security specialization.
Is the Specialization Worth the Cost?
Yes, by a wide margin. While the audit costs are a few thousand bucks, each Security specialization grants roughly $20,000 per year in Azure and Security Copilot IUR credits alone, plus dozens of Microsoft 365 E5, Entra Suite, Intune Suite, and Copilot seats that your business gets to use.
It’s also worth noting you can stack up to three Security specializations.
These are product benefits Microsoft provides to your business, not cash added on top of your customer projects, and they come before the new customer revenue the marketplace visibility and trust of the badge help you win.
What Happens if I Fail on Audit Day?
You receive a Gap Report listing open items, then complete a short Gap Review meeting to close them within the required window. If the gaps are resolved, you Pass. If not, you can reapply.
How Should Partners Prepare?
The audit has a way of sneaking up on partners so starting ASAP is advised. Organize your customer evidence, mature your documentation, standardize your delivery methodology, and prepare your subject matter experts. The Partner Masters offers a dedicated Microsoft Specialization Audit preparation program covering all five Security specializations.
I’m Not Sure Where to Start
We run the most advanced Microsoft Specialization Audit preparation program available. We have years of experience helping partners pass highly demanding Azure specialization audits, and we have now expanded that program to Security services to cover all five specializations: Cloud Security, Data Security, Identity and Access Management, Threat Protection, and Digital Sovereignty.
